The Bayport Fire Department was host to their annual "Big Bucks Bonaza" lottery event last weekend.
Department Chief Paul Bachek said the big bucks event is a great way for the community to come out and see each other.
"People come to have fun, have some good food and hopefully win," Bachek said.
Cash prizes ranging from $500 to $50,000 are drawn by lottery and awarded to the attendees. Close to 2,000 people attended this year; some returning from as far away as Baldwinsville, which is located near Syracuse, NY. Members of the fire department cooked hot dogs, hamburgers and bratwurst as well as provided beer, wine and various soft drinks.
The grand prize of $50,000 cash was awarded to the Martin family of Sayville.
Karen Bensen, from Farmingdale, has been attending the Bonazana for over ten years.
"We've been coming here for years. We come here because it's a great opportunity. We hope that we're going to win but we never have. It's still a great day," said Bensen.
