Reverend Fred Mech 1928 - 2022

Mech - Frederick, past pastor for the Bayport Fire Department.

"Let us remember" the Reverend Dr. Frederick Mech was called home to be with his Lord and Savior on the morning of January 15, 2022, while surrounded by his family. Frederick was born on July 7, 1928, in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of John C. And Gertrude Mech. He attended Patterson Park HS and then graduated from Albright College, majoring in Sociology.

He received his Masters of Divinity degree from Drew University Theological Seminary, graduating Cum Laude. Further study led to a Doctor of Ministry degree from Drew University, a Master of Arts degree from Adelphi University and training as a pastoral counselor at the Foundation for Religion and Mental Health. Frederick was ordained an Elder in the United Methodist Church and served as Pastor of the Church of the Good Shepherd in West Hempstead for twelve years. He also served as Pastor for United Methodist congregations in Roslyn, Rye, West Hills and Bayport, NY. In each location, "Gods Grace sustained the Lord's ministry." Reverend Mech was preceded in death by his son John Clifton Mech III and his wives Audrey and Margaret. He is survived by his children Virginia Steigerwald and Kristin Sallah, son-in-laws Don Sallah and Wayne Steigerwald and grandchildren Susan, Vincent, Brittany and Savannah along with 6 great-grandchildren. There will be a memorial and funeral service at the Bayport United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 28, 2022. A Masonic service will be held, along with a Firematic service. Service can also be viewed on YouTube and Zoom. After services, Reverend Mech will be laid to rest at St. Ann's Church Cemetery in Sayville, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice Catholic Home Care, www.Catholichomecare.chsli.org or a Cancer research organization of your choice.
